Potential Motor damage

  I have a Sears 4200 Watt portable generator. It has one 220 volt outlet that I use to power my one half hp 220 volt submersible well pump when the commercial power goes out. Recently I had to replace the pump because the motor failed and I think the generator may have been the problem because one of the two generator breakers was ''burned out'' (not just tripped). The generator problem has now been fixed and everything is back to normal. What precaution can I take to protect my new pump motor in the future.
